Tavira is a picturesque authentic small town in the Eastern Algarve that has been spared from mass tourism.
In the beautiful little streets and many little squares you will find medieval churches, small craft shops with handmade local art and - of course - numerous cafés and restaurants to enjoy local specialties.
The Gilão River flows leisurely through the town center and into the unique Ria Formosa lagoon system which is seperated from the sea by the beautiful sand islands. The protected Ria Formasa is home to numerous bird species, including the graceful flamingo.
There is a lot to do, such as boat and bike tours, concerts, traditional markets with fresh food, cultural events and much more.
The calm and beautiful town is rightly called the pearl of the Algarve. Together with the friendliness of the locals it is very easy to immerse yourself in the Portuguese way of life after just a short time.
Located at the eastern Algarve, Tavira is nestled between hilly backlands with varied hiking trails and the unique Lagoon system "Ria Formosa" with its beautiful sand islands. There are several wonderful beaches "from protected calm to openly wavy" sea.
In and around Tavira there are also very nice cycle paths, both near the sea and in the backcountry.
